  2010 OEA Advocacy Conference

February 19-21

Waterford Marriot Hotel

Oklahoma City

Leonard Court, an expert in employment law, and Sen. Kenneth Corn, one Oklahoma’s strongest champions for public education, will provide keynote addresses at the 2010 Advocacy Conference.

“The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” serves as the theme for this year’s conference, which returns Feb. 19-20 to the Marriott Waterford Hotel in Oklahoma City.

Court is a director for the law firm of Crowe & Dunlevy where he serves as chairman of the firm’s Labor and Employment Law Section. A graduate of Oklahoma State University and Harvard School of Law, Court is a past Chairman of the Labor and Employment Law Section of the Oklahoma Bar Association. He is one of only two practicing Oklahoma attorneys to be inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Labor and Employment Lawyers.

Corn (D, Howe) received the OEA’s Glenn Snider Human Relations Award last spring for his work to promote education opportunities for all children and better the pay and benefits of school personnel. He has sponsored legislation to provide fully-paid individual health insurance premiums for certified and school support professionals; free tuition and fees for all Oklahoma students during their first two years in college, and high school dropout prevention.

Three sessions of breakouts will include workshops on bargaining basics, school finance, teacher rights, and special education issues to name a few. In addition, Tulsa CTA President Denzel Kesterson and TCTA Vice President Patti Ferguson will join OEA Advocacy Specialist Linda Hendrix to discuss what to expect when a school district considers implementing a pay-for-performance plan. TCTA was an integral part of a Tulsa Public Schools effort to obtain a multi-million dollar Gates Foundation grant which included a pay for performance component.

Registration is $35 per person for certified employees and $15 per person for support professionals. The cost includes continental breakfast and lunch on Saturday, Feb. 20, and all conference materials.

Conference participants are expected to make their own lodging reservations directly with the Waterford Hotel at a special rate of $83, single or double occupancy, plus tax, by calling 800/228-9290 or 405/848-4782. The special rate is good only for reservations made prior to Feb. 5. Space is limited, so call today.
